Understanding SNR vs NRR: Choosing the Right Headset for Noisy Environments

When using a tour guide system in a noisy environment—such as a factory, warehouse, or construction site—clear communication is essential. One of the most important factors is achieving the appropriate hearing protection by selecting the correct earplugs, headphones or headsets.
 
Start by identifying the noise exposure level, typically measured in dB(A) over an 8-hour period. The goal is to reduce this to a safe level—generally below 85 dB(A), as per many workplace safety regulations.
 
However, aiming just below 85 dB(A) may not be ideal. Standards like EN 458 recommend a protected level between 75–80 dB(A), which balances hearing protection with the ability to communicate and hear warning signals. Excessive noise reduction (below ~70 dB) can isolate workers and lead them to remove protection, increasing risk.
 
To avoid this, select hearing protectors that reduce noise to within the 75–80 dB(A) range at the ear. Two common ratings you'll encounter are SNR (Single Number Rating) and NRR (Noise Reduction Rating). But what do these mean and how do they affect your choice?

What is SNR?

SNR (Single Number Rating) is the UK and European standard for measuring how much noise a hearing protection device can reduce. It’s expressed in decibels (dB) and gives a number that represents the average noise reduction across a range of frequencies.

• Higher SNR = More noise reduction
• Common SNR values range from 20 dB to 36 dB

Example:
If the ambient noise level is 100 dB and your headset has an SNR of 30, the perceived noise level would be reduced to 70 dB.
Some regulations recommend adding 4 dB to the calculated level to take account of real-world issues, such as poor hearing protector fitting.

What is NRR?

NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) is the American standard, also expressed in decibels, but calculated differently. It tends to be more conservative in its estimates.

• NRR values typically range from 14 dB to 33 dB
• To estimate actual noise reduction, OSHA recommends subtracting 7 dB from the NRR and then dividing by 2

Example:
If your headset has an NRR of 30, the effective noise reduction is: (30−7)/2=11.5 dB
So, in a 100 dB environment, the perceived noise level would be around 88.5 dB.
